When your newly diagnosed, it can be a minefield trying to work out what treatment is going to work for you.
And so many people have an opinion on what is right for your body.
Once I got a diagnosis of Crohn’s disease there was no question about not taking medication for it. I know the list of side effects can be really scary and some of them are really hard to deal with like steroids for example. Moon face, mood swings and insomnia but I was willing to put up with this and anything to get my symptoms under control.
For me personally I would take Western medicine over alternatives any day.
As I believe that my disease left to its own devices puts my health in jeopardy and I have experienced rock bottom without treatment.
That being said I do feel that there is a huge benefit to alternative medicine being used along side Western medicine
By treating ourselves as a whole instead of just a sum of parts to be fixed. There is alot to be said about feeling of sound mind and body.
I want my body to be healing, I know it can’t be cured with western medicines or alternatives but there is nothing wrong with wanting to feel better in spirit either.
This is where I think alternative medicine can help from massage to yoga to meditation.
Anything involving taking supplements or herbal remedies, you should always consult a physician as this can interfere with certain medications.
I think Western Medicine in terms of how they treat patients could learn something from complimentary treatments that would boost our mental and physical wellbeing.
Although people should be free to choose whatever method of healthcare they want, I believe they must be informed as to the safety and efficacy of whatever method they choose.
I of course know what works for me at present and do listen to the advice of my consultant. That being said I have asked for alternative medications when things haven’t worked out and like to be very much involved in decisions regarding treatments.
But a spa day and massage when things are less crazy in the outside world wouldn’t go a miss.
Please do comment if you have any thoughts in this, or things you do along side treatments you have. And please bare in mind this post is based solely on my opinion and should not be used as medical advice.
